Absolutely stunning examples of found-art, metal sculpting with a flair for animation. Fascinating visual experiences. Always interesting. Perfect home and office art pieces that are sure to draw a crowd. Sandwriters demonstrate the physics of the pendulum as they draw their kaleidoscope-like ribbons in the sand.

A personal note...

I've probably created 75 to 100 sandwriters and each one is unique in every way. I like the rugged types as well as the detailed, dainty, small table types. The fun is in the creation and the enjoyment continues as friends and collectors discover the interesting patterns that get drawn in the fine sand granules. I'm flattered that others have tried to copy my designs but no one has ever been able to copy what's in my mind. A friend told me that these might even pick up seismic events but I've never been able to prove it as we don't have many earthquakes in the Houston area.

Animation

Although I have made larger, this is one of my largest sand writers standing at 3'9" in height. It can be disassembled into 7 individual pieces for transportation. Because of the large moment of the pendulum it also creates the very best sand etchings.

I used a large farm spade for the table and a 1958 Chevrolet cam shaft for the center post. The pendulum support is made from the handle of an old water hand pump I found while walking around a ghost town near Aspen, Colorado.
